Boils: Deciphering the Word and the Disease

A name of a thing tells a lot about its attributes. It can disclose so much about its essence that etymology need not be consulted to figure out the connection between the name and the thing itself. In the case of boils, a deeper understanding of this skin disease is necessary to avoid confusion. While there is an existing mystery as to the etymology of boils, you may realize that its name makes a lot of sense.

The word “boil” as a verb signifies speed, anger and heat. Such words can be related to boils, the skin infection. For one, Staphylococcus epidermidis or Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium that permeates the skin and brings about skin boils, attacks and multiplies in a quick manner.

It is easy to detect if you’re positive for boils or not as they have obvious signs and symptoms. You can notice its signs in the form of small, red spots. Such spots gradually develop into inflamed, angry-looking nodules. They may be accompanied by an itchy and/or painful sensation as a symptom.

The red nodules may eventually develop into larger lumps that have yellow heads or pustules. Boils in this case, are either tender or hard to touch. However, you don’t have to wait for boils to develop pustules before seeking for your health provider’s help. Once you see the early signs of boils, it’s best to consult them immediately.

Treatments for boils vary and usually depend on the severity of their condition. That is why it’s best to let a health provider see your boils first before doing anything with it. They may recommend that you use a hot pack or hot soak as a treatment. Such treatment is effective in stimulating your blood circulation. This moves the white blood cells and antibodies to combat the bacterium that is the main culprit of this infection.

Another treatment is the use of surgical drainage to remove the pus from the lump. Antibiotics may also be used to flush out the bacteria from your body. These last two procedures are often prescribed by health providers if the condition of boils is severe.
